With less than satisfactory results at managing the wind I decided that the next option would be to add a Lynx fairing from Britannia Composites.  The Lynx fairing is a aftermarket fairing custom designed to work with a large number of dual sport motorcycles, including the DRZ.  The three main advantages of the Lynx are an adjustable windscreen, improved lighting, and a dash for mounting various accessories such as a power outlet.  While the improved lighting and the dash are nice features my primary interest was the adjustable windscreen.  I had a Lynx fairing on the Husqvarna TE610 I had previously owned and it had proven to be the best solution of several that I tried on the Husky.

At about $500 the Lynx is not a cheap option, which is why I tried the other solutions first.  But none of those options providing acceptable results so I elected to spend the money on the Lynx.

Unfortunately, once I had the Lynx installed and took it for a test ride I was surprised to discover I was still experiencing a bit of helmet buffeting.  Well, darn it!  There must be something about the design and geometry of the DRZ that accentuates this issue because in over two years of ownership of the TE610 with the Lynx fairing installed I had not experienced any noticeable head buffeting.

I decided to try one more thing – I had a Maier windscreen in my pile of stuff and figured I would swap the stock Lynx windscreen with the larger Maier.  My buddy JT, who was an invaluable assistant during this entire project, drilled some mounting holes in the Maier and in short order we had it installed on the Lynx.

A few days after installing the Lynx + Maier I went on a 700 mile dual sport adventure ride in Mexico that included about 300 total miles of sustained highway speeds of 65-70 and was happy to discover that the Maier was the final piece to the puzzle.  It provided a noticeable increase in wind management and the head buffeting was gone.

The Lynx + Maier isn’t a perfect solution; you won’t enjoy the same level of wind management as a sport touring or touring motorcycle would provide, but that wasn’t my goal.  Instead my intent was to to be able to ride up to 200 miles of sustained highway speeds in a day in reasonable comfort.  I believe the Lynx + Maier meets that need and is an acceptable solution for a dual sport adventure bike.

  2. I’ve been using a Lynx on my 690 since Feb 2014. Love it. Eliminated the buffeting around the helmet by adding spacers about 1″ thick to move the windshield away from the fairing.

      I think the Lynx is a fine product. I sure liked the one I had on my Husky TE610. I’m just not sure why it wasn’t as effective on the DRZ. Glad to know it works on the 690 – one of these days I’ll probably own a 690 and when I do I’m sure I’ll want a windscreen.

      I have seen, but have not used, the Maier windscreen but, like you, would like to know how well it works. If you ultimately get one would you please let me know if you like it?


  3. Lynx appears to now offer a larger “touring” windshield as an option to the fairing, in addition to the smaller one – which it looks like is what you initially received. I simply post here as FYI to those (like myself) doing research on this issue in 2018
