The Worm Farm
My friend Big Don took this photo of me yesterday while we were out riding in the Texas hill country. This photo reminded me of my childhood.
When I was kid I lived near the Texas coast. And lots of fishermen. So I thought I would start a business selling fishing worms. I started a worm farm in my backyard and then sold the worms door-to-door in my neighborhood. My sales strategy was to knock on the front door and when someone answered the door I would introduce myself – “Hi, I’m Richard. I’ve got worms.”
Later on I needed to make more money in order to help fund college. So I went into the seafood business in Houston. I would drive to Galveston and buy fresh seafood off the boats there. Then I would drive back to Houston and sell it. My door-to-door sales approach worked so well when I was selling worms that I decided to try the same thing selling seafood. I would knock on the door and when someone answered I would say, “Hi, I’m Richard. I’ve got crabs.”
